Second Wave of Flooding Hits Kentucky

Yesterday evening Kentucky VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) met to coordinate the statewide response to the widespread river ongoing across the state. Our Executive Director, Dr. Shelli Gregory, was in attendance to represent our organization and contribute to the ongoing response efforts.

This comes less than seven weeks after devastating flash flooding in Eastern Kentucky, prompting 16 approved county declarations (15 within our diocese). This time, 75 counties and 42 cities have written declarations awaiting approval. Flooding is concentrated along the Ohio River and its tributaries, with water levels continuing to rise in some areas. Several of the impacted counties are within our diocese, but for the most part, they are different counties from those impacted during the February floods.

The severe flooding has profoundly affected our communities, leading to tragic losses and widespread displacement. At least four fatalities have been reported, including the heartbreaking death of a young boy in Frankfort, who was swept away by flood water while walking to his school bus stop. The floods have forced numerous evacuations, with residents anxiously awaiting the receding waters to assess and begin repairing the damage to their homes. In Frankfort, for instance, the Kentucky River reached near-record levels, submerging parts of the city and prompting mandatory evacuations.
