Types of Adoption

A Caring Connection of Catholic Charities-Diocese of Lexington provides domestic, infant adoption services. There are varying levels of adoption that determine if or what level of contact will be maintained between the placing parents and the adoptive family.

In an Open Adoption, the adoptive family is selected from albums containing pictures, letters and information about your lifestyle. The placing parent and prospective adoptive couple/family meet and decide the level of contact they feel would be best. You have the opportunity to get to know one another and maintain contact throughout the child’s life through visits, call, emails, letters and pictures.

In a Semi-Open Adoption, the adoptive family and birth parents may or may not meet. Letters, pictures, gifts, etc. may be exchanged through the agency. Identifying information may or may not be exchanged.

Closed Adoption can be chosen if the birth parent prefers not to have contact with the adoptive family. All health and non-identifying social information is still provided to the family so it may benefit the child. In all of the above types of adoptions, confidentiality is extremely important. Only that information which the birth parents wish to provide to the adoptive family (other than medical, health and non-identifying social information) will be shared. While you may choose any type of adoption to participate in according to your family’s wishes, at A Caring Connection the placing parent determines the level of contact desired and chooses a family that is also interested in that type of adoption. If you are considering our program, it is important for you to know that the majority of persons considering to place their children for adoption through our agency are interested in some type of an open relationship. All of the above-named adoptions are legally the same and we are available to provide support and mediation if needed. Our staff have many years of experience with all types of domestic, infant adoptions and will provide you with additional information to help you make the decision you feel is best for your family.
