Clyde and Maura Graven

Married since August 19, 1943, Maura said she began following her sailor from assignment to assignment and as she has been known to say, “our life was one adventure after another.” Clyde and Maura have been a team in all of their social service and voluntary endeavors. Their philosophy in life has been and remains “I am my brother’s keeper.”
Prior to retirement, Clyde had a distinguished career in law enforcement and is a decorated WWII veteran. Maura recently published a novel, “Shamrocks in the Bluegrass,” and is at work on a second novel.
They have two children, Mary Graven Peddicord and Sean Graven and three grandsons, Brian, Aaron and Michael.
Because of their tremendous leadership skills and caring and compassionate personalities, Clyde and Maura Graven were selected as recipients of The Sister Fran Moore Award. At the venerable ages of nearly 89 and 86, Clyde and Maura remain engaged in community life. They are truly an inspiration to those who meet and interact with them. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Lexington is proud to recognize the Gravens who have supported the mission of Catholic Charities by their combined 10 years of service as board members and as volunteers for the agency. For twelve years, Clyde was significantly involved in the sale of tickets for the agency’s annual reverse raffle. Maura planned for and orchestrated the food service for the event for five consecutive years, while also crafting beautiful handmade baptismal gowns for the silent auction and if that wasn’t enough she catered the Bishop’s Dinner, purchased at the silent auction, for seven years. Those dinners were memorable international experiences featuring cuisine from Italy, Hungary, and Morocco to name a few.
Clyde and Maura have been inspiring to countless others not only in Kentucky but beyond our state borders and they remain actively involved and engaged when opportunities arise and continue to be a valuable resource to those who encounter them. It is with great respect and honor that we present them with the Sister Fran Moore Award.
